Notes:
The decision to set this production of Antigone
in a "pre-historic" time came from the director. Given this, the
costume designer came up with the designs for the main
characters. From there, she and I together draped fabric on the
main characters and large chorus, making decisions for each person
based on their body type and comfort level.
We used fake and real fur, leather and a variety of highly textured
cotton fabrics. Most of the costumes were held together with
leather strapping and we also made "shoes" of thick leather and
strapping for some of the
characters. Tiresias was an especially interesting look, as he
was
essentially wrapped in gauze (ultimately stitched together with a rear
closure)
and covered with layer upon layer of textured fabric. We added
bamboo
to the fingers of one hand, which the actor used to accent his
speech.
This show was a wonderful exploration of non-traditional draping and
the
use of texture.
